Today is the 12th anniversary of the Great Hanshin Earthquake. Over 6,200 people died in Kobe and the surrounding areas. Since i've lived here, i've met several people that were living in Kobe during the earthquake. Kind of makes you speechless.

being home was good, and helped me make my mind up as well. and helped me break my finger, a tooth, get a tetnus shot and spend lots of money on buffalo wings.

got back yesterday and was exhausted. but, met some japanese people i knew in the airplane on the ride over so we hit the chilis in full force in detroit. had a few cool ones and some salsa. the guys i met had never been to the u.s. before and were blown away by large variety of big mamas devouring massive plates of food at the chilis. all in a days work for those ladies.

not sure what im doing today, but i hope it involves a little of this...

looking to get my mind off of a lot of stuff. do your duty and help a young man out! excited to see everybody.

well, i mentioned in a previous entry that i would be changing jobs soon. tis true tis true, but it, unfortunatly, couldnt be happening any slower.

since the middle of january i've been interviewing for a liason/translation position with Harmon Intl. i would be working at toyota motor corps. headquarters situated just outside of nagoya. its a great step up, in a direction i would love to pursue (language) as well as a few others i never thought i'd even come close to touching in my lifetime (engineering, business).

needless to say, at the time i was offered the opportunity, i jumped at it full force because i am most definatly ready for a change, after teaching english (in various forms) here in japan for over 4 years now. the interviews were tough, and there were a plenty of em (4) lasting from 10 minutes to 3 and a half hours. by the time march rolled around and the 3rd interview hadn't spawned any offers, i began to worry, until finally, in the middle of march, the offer came through. the offer met, if not exceeded, the expectations i had so that was all fine and good. the catch was i needed to have my current visa switched to a different type of visa, which can be tricky (and time consuming).

i put my notice in to my current job, giving them a months warning, ending my employment on the 28th of april. still waiting for the visa, which most definatly should come through, and i'm not so worried about; its the waiting and the not having a job from this friday that is sending me on thinking trips i havent ever experienced.

i'm pretty stressed out, which came out in a 24hr beer attack with my good buddy ted from friday evening to saturday evening. not the smartest thing to do, but i did it, it felt good while it lasted but made miss kate a bit angry/nervous/stressed and sad. i feel like a total boob. getting my thoughts straight on this is so complex, if i could show you the mile long list of things i have to take care of/do/change that haunts me not only during the day but throughout my dreams ...

i talked to my future boss today about my stresses a little and he gave me some words of encouragement.. felt good, and kate is always giving me good words. i just feel pretty bad that she has to put up with some of my insecurities and stresses on this. im trying my best, and will try even harder to make this easier for her.

on a lighter note, this opportunity is many things, as well as a chance to come back and work in the u.s.a. in very nice shapes. (pool term) .... so, it couldnt get better AFTER the visa changes and i can pull myself out of this sticky, ickey, gooey yuck ass thinking.

whew,
first day to stop and actually take a fair look at my position in this silly ass world. its been fairly stop and start since i started the new year at my job. a few weeks on, a few weeks completely barren and moneyless. i decided to take the initiative and look around for some other fish in the sea. ill let you know how it goes.

ive been doing a lot of , a little of , not too much of though id like to do more.

my band played a show the other weekend, it was a wedding party for one of our guitar players. i think it went well, but you can be the judge. i put some tunes from the show up on my 'our media' site so, check em out.

also do yourself a favor and take a look at japans ability to always be on the cutting edge of good taste.

howdy,

sorry for the late post here.. don't want to get in that habit. had a weird couple of weeks. i was headed to one of my jobs during train rush hour about 2 weeks ago when my train was stopped in the station before the one i needed to transfer at. anyone in japan knows that the trains NEVER stop unless its an earthquake, insane amounts of snow, a wreck which also never happens or a suicide. Suicides are a big (problem?) thing in japan (look here or here) and to no surprise to anyone that lives in japan, are often facilitated by using trains.

when my train stopped, i was curious, but didnt think much of it, until we got to the station. once we arrived i noticed that the platform i needed to be on was packed with people, which was odd. exited my train, and then noticed local and prefectural police running around, which immediatly let me in on the fact that it was a suicide. in typical japanese fasion, not one person seemed phased, waiting politely and quietly for the next train to arrive. there were so many people, there was no way i'd be catching the next train to get to my job. i called my company and told them what was happening and they said another teacher had seen the crowd from the other way, so they were aware of the situation, and they contacted the job i was heading to and rescheduled it. in that time another train had actually come and picked up the crowd of people and i was about to switch to another platform when i saw the body bags and the blood.

wasnt too happy about that. ive never seen a body bag, with blood drops near it. dont want to see that either. this led me into a big downward spiral of thinking.. lasted a few days and i really dont think im gonna get in to it on here. feel better now.

got through that, and had a bit of a thanksgiving at heywards house, complete with turkey, dressing and a fukucup of sake,... also a little chocolate asse.

kate (aka ghost boobs) came down on friday to hang out for the weekend. we did a bit o' partyin on friday and saturday night. ended it with a show i had with the band im playing in now. the show went very well, especially for our first.

this past weekend was the inuyama fall matsuri or festival that ive taken part in for a little under 2 years now... in the usual festival, we push dashi, or floats around the city and it looks a little something like this:

but seeing as we had already put those suckers out to roost twice this year (once in the beginning of april, and again later in april at the expo) the town festival leaders decided to make a newer/different festival... involving short ho pants, and a float with basically no wheels with a giant taiko drum on top to be carried around the town.. p.s., my pictures arent the greatest due to proximity and large amounts of alcohol consumed.. please bare with me...

gettin ready to roll, it was about this time i noticed i had a fever.. so the cure for this was..

we moved the float to the front of the town gym, which is located at the foot of the hill that Inuyama castle is on. actually, that link shows some pictures that i will talk about later.. anyways, we plopped the float down and went into the gym just in time to see..

a japanese punk cover band.. hmmm? .. anyways, everybody did high school slam dancing and chicken fights .. a strange addition to a japanese festival.

after a boogie on stage, we went outside to see more random shit..

like fire swinger people and a short taiko session ..

by this point, (as you can see), we were feeling it.. you might say 'in the zone' .. but i'd just say 'stanky'.. thats when our leaders decided to take us up towards the castle, a very very steep incline. its basically a path up a mountain made out of cobble stones.. look here ... it hurt.. bad. but was ridiculously fun and exciting... pictures from here on out suffer a little due to hand/eye inhibitions..

a fun time had by all.. ended with a taco at my friends bar ... a trip/fall head bang in the street in front of a bunch of cars and a kickin fever/cold i caught.. (feelin really stinky right now). but i earned these i do believe from hard drinkin, stinkin and livin over the last few weeks. definatly a sign to take her easy for a bit. but who's complainin! yaaa ha.

had a fun one last weekend too. found myself teaching an 'intensive' at Aisin - AW, a multinational transmission manufacturer, from Friday morning until Saturday evening. intensives are intense (gufaw) hence the name. it's 2 straight days of english crammed up these poor salary men japanese guys, who are about to be shipped off to the us, germany, france, england.. you name it. we eat, drink, shit together for the duration and it's generally a well payed, yet thoroughly exhausting time. i had a good group, no pics though, and that night we had a big party, drank and had a nice time.

ole miss katron decided she wanted to come down again to visit, so i met her when i got back to my hizood around 6:30. she was waiting at smashhead, went home, i showered and we went out for a silly night..
... which included a kenny rogers duet with Ethan.
next day was...

had a wild one the last week. got the heads up from my buddies that they were coming to tour in japan, so i set aside some time off. they, of montreal, had recently put out a new record which i was enjoying a bunch, and it was also hard for me to imagine some friends i hadnt been in touch with for some time coming over playing a record that i was shaking rump too so much. so, it started with a halloween party ... and ended with my ass on the floor at the bottom of the stairs. here are some pics and pics and pics and ....

had a revealing weekend. actually it all started with bluegrass camp the previous weekend and culminated in a documentary i saw last sunday..

bluegrass was fun. ive been camping about 4 times with this funny as hell group of japanese guys that play bluegrass extremely well. this time around i took 2 of my white buddies and everyone had a damn fine time:

... needless to say, a fun weekend.. which then led right into a monday off, tues. weds. thurs. job, and night with DJ Shadow and Keb Darge show at a club near my house... shook my damn tail feather...

quite a few smiles on that night... and a small head ache the next morning..

which led into...

.. my friend named kate came down for the long weekend from her roost in Toyama.. which is just a bit north of me ... anyhoo, she showed up on friday having never met me before, and vice versa. brave lady. she is a buddy of a young man named kyle davis, the yunga brutha of an old friend of mine spence davis (aka chaz) (who has been out of intronet commission for sometime.. for no goddamn good reason at all, im assuming... (toes tapping angrily))...

where was i...

so, i took her out to mamas who was actually cleaning house that night.. she decided she wanted to take us to chinese, telling dirty jokes and giving dirty massages to kate all night long.

the following day was an eye opener for me. after my last year, i havent been the most productive/happy individual the world has seen. between being falsely diagnosed with colon cancer to having my head crushed between some brazillians muscles; this last year doesnt really come in the top 29 at all. ive been complacent to the fact that i have many semi-fulfilling friendships/relationships with some people, japanese and foreign and havent really noticed that this has kind of reinforced my dilemma of zero production, zero creativity and zero goal making. kate and i had a really good weekend. we talked openly without any blocks about many many things. refreshing to the utmost. it was surprising and really shook me up in an amazing way. i was able to see, on my own, some of my etremely bad habits and thinking, and also see ways to correct these things. im hoping to stay the course. i will.

we spent the next day at a museum near my house looking at a pop art exhibit and we also ate at yucky ass japanese dennys.

i was sad to see kate go, but i sent her off with plans to go see her in a few weeks.

after she jumped on a subway, i met my friend heyward to go see a movie called 107+1 Make the heaven. this was absolutely the perfect movie to watch with the weekend i had had. i acutally just looked at heywards blog and he summed it up real good.. and im really fucking tired of typing this epic ass giglgamesh post.

Simply put, it was about a group of people in Okinawa trying to make positive impact on their local surroundings by completing three projects: 1) raising a town's awareness of solid waste management, 2) knitting a 1km long rainbow scarf for children in Afghanistan, and 3) rowing a canoe from Okinawa all the way to Kagoshima.

it was a inspirational in the sense that they want to motivate the viewer to realize that anything they want to do is possible, and to make change in your life, or others lives just takes getting up and doing it. sounds so easy put that way, but we all know its not.

if anyone i know reads this damn thing, im thinking about getting a skype telephone number for the U.S., so anyone can just call my computer for free.. tell me what you think booty lickers. hope all is good with you guys.

well, unbeknowenst to most people, i kind of came to japan to take a big vacation (from music (all forums dealing with music and people having to do with music, from shows to playing shows to being in a band to wanting to be in a band to wanting to ever even think that i would want to make any sort of music whatsoever in my life again kind of vacation)) it helps when the shows over here range from around $20 to $50 just to see your average pooty poot poot indie band.

when i read my friend tonys blog recently about him purchasing a new ibook, i wept, screamed, self mutilated and fell several times. i also opened my wallet and stroked my ever will (me) destroying credit card a few times to see if it would lead me in the right (wrong) direction towards the nagoya apple store. good sense lead me to just go buy a bunch of beers with my friend instead.. with cash. and then i was happy again.

i did the second intelligent thing today, by going to the computer store and finding a usb2 wifi adapter so i can surf the various networks (fo FREE) that surround my house and the various restaurants i frequent.. about 2,900yen or $25. can actually goto the bar i like going to and steal the bar i dont like going to's internet... cool.

i suck. havent done anything except sip on the fine fine wines and beer and sho chu and pee of the metropolis im currently haunting. it's so nice to be back in the city but things are aeons different than the country, as one can expect. the biggest surprise is that country people in japan seem to take to foreigners much better than city folk. very strange, but actually, nagoya is kind of famed for that. a bit of the old ice ass cold not so friendly butt hole syndrome. dont want to catch it.

Inuyama Matsuri at the World Expo

this year, Nagoya is the host for the Expo, formally known as the World's Fair. anyways, its a big deal ... a big big big deal, and i was lucky enough to have been on my old town's 'dashi' or float team for the town festival. they had asked me to do it last year, and ive been doing it since then.

for one weekend, all of the float or 'dashi' style festivals were invited to join the Expo, and bring their 'dashi's' to exhibit them and take part in a joint festival. so, our over 400 year old 'dashi' was disassembled and transporting, along with us, down to the festival at around 3am one saturday morning. we built the thing with our hands and partook in the international festivities.. which was mainly.... beer.
